Since a lot of people get depressed from time to time, there is that endless question if depression is a real illness. The answer is: yes. The deadly one, that is. It has been said that about 1 out of eight Usa residents will likely become clinically depressed. A few experience it once in a lifetime, while others may have multiple episodes.

This kind of is a fact: when a person gets depressed initially, there is a 50 percent chance that he will fall to the same predicament over again. And come the 2nd time, you will find the threat that this individual will go to a third depressing episode.

Depression is a genuine illness as it involves the mental, psychological and even physical function of the person. This is not simply a transient sad feeling that will go away when one wants it to. You will find symptoms and signs as well as corresponding treatment. If not managed properly and immediately, it may escalate to worse conditions. Similar to other illness, depression has also variations.

There are three types of depressive disorders: major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and dysthymic disorder.

Major depression is a culmination of all of the symptoms and signs that intervene with one’s capability to act normally. It could happen once, but continious episodes are possible.

Its less severe friend is dysthymia which is characterized by the same symptoms of serious depression, only they don’t totally hinder one’s activities. A person that has dysthymic disorder could suffer major depressive disorder sometime during his lifetime.

Bipolar disorder is also a type of depressive disorder that involves drastic feeling changes, from being very high one minute to significantly depressed another minute. The mania cycle could make the person hyper and overenthusiastic but it changes as soon as the stressed out cycle hits. The depressed cycle encompasses all the symptoms of depression.

Because depression is a health problem, there are symptoms. Again, they are the next:

1. Continious “empty” feeling

2. Serious hopelessness

3. Feeling guilty and worthless most the time

4. Lack or loss of pursuits in activities that used to bring happiness to the person and this includes sex.

5. Visible fatigue

6. Has a difficult time {making|taking decisions

7. Development of rest problems

8. Loss of appetite and drastic body change or loss

9. Suicidal attempts plus thoughts.

10. Pronounced frustration

11. Physical aches and discomfort which may have no physiological basis

Fortunately at the end of this dark canal called depression, there is great hope. Treatment is available in three types: psychiatric therapy, antidepressant medicine and the mixture of the two. There are also times when electroconvulsive remedy (ECT) and light remedy are employed.
